The iconic small car from Volkswagen India, ‘Beetle’ received myriad changes over the previous model including eminent cosmetic tweaks and a new 1.4 litre petrol engine that comes paired to a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission.

Launched at a price of Rs 28.73 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai), the new Beetle is available in a single variant powered by a new petrol engine. Based on a new platform, Beetle gets cosmetic upgrades on the exterior such as new bumpers, spoiler, reworked hood, new roofline and 16 inch alloy wheels. The 1.4 litre, turbo-petrol engine has replaced the ageing 2.0 litre, naturally aspirated petrol unit. Mated to a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox, the engine is good for maximum power of 149bhp and gets paddle shifters as standard.

With the addition of new design elements and styling bits such as bi-xenon headlamps, LED day-time running lights, rear tail gate spoiler and 16-inch alloy wheels, it looks sportier. That said, it retains the earmarked curvy silhouette, keeping the essence of the hatchback alive.

The sporty character is also visible inside as the seats don the premium leather upholstery and the three-spoke steering wheel gets a leather cover. In terms of space, it offers comfortable room for four occupants. As for the comfort gizmos, it gets dual-zone climate control, instrument cluster with an electronic speedometer, trip odometer and tachometer.

One of the major changes made to the ninth generation Beetle is the new 1.4 litre, TSI petrol engine churning out maximum power of 147bhp. It comes mated to a 7-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters for effortless gear shifting.

On the outside, it sports LED DRLs, Panoramic sunroof, Bi-Xenon headlamps, front fog lamps, LED licence plate light and rear spoiler. The up-market cabin sports premium leather seats, scuff plates, leather wrapped multi-function steering wheel and paddle shift.

Deriving power from the 1.4 litre TSI petrol engine, Beetle is claimed to deliver 17.7km/l.

Volkswagen have armed Beetle with a bunch of safety provisions such as dual front airbags, combined curtain and side-bags, electronic stability control with driver steering recommendation, ABS, ASR, EDL and EDRC. Other than the above mentioned safety equipment, it also gets disc brakes, ISOFIX-child seat mounting points, head restraints, central locking, electronic immobiliser and front & rear park distance control etc.
