Founded in 1978, the Chennai based TVS Motor Company Limited is a part of TVS Group founded by T.V Sundaram Iyengar. TVS forayed into automobile sector in late 1950s and started manufacturing two-wheelers, tyres and components. TVS’ Hosur manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu was set up in 1978 to produce mopeds and in 1980, it started manufacturing India’s first two seater moped-TVS 50 under its new division Sundaram Clayton. Two years later in 1982, TVS entered a joint-venture with Japan based Suzuki Motor Corporation seeking technical symbioses. TVS-Suzuki together produced various popular models such as Samurai, Shogun and Suzuki Fiero. The collaboration between the Chennai based two-wheeler manufacturer and Japan’s auto giant came to an end in 2001 and the company was rechristened TVS Motor. Apart from pioneering moped production, TVS was the first two-wheeler company to develop India’s first fully indigenous motorcycle-Victor. TVS Victor was a runaway success and continues to be a popular model in TVS’range of products. Other than Victor nameplate, Apache series has also been popular among customers. In the scooter segment, TVS offers a number of models including the very popular Jupiter. TVS’ line of products in India includes scooters, motorcycles, mopeds and three-wheelers.
