Tata Tiago Preview
Tata has had hatchbacks in its product portfolio from the very beginning ranging from Indica to Nano to Bolt but its absence in the mid-sized hatchback segment was quite evident. With carmakers encashing the popularity of their mid-sized hatchback models, Tata too decided to come up with a fresh product that defied the dominance of well-received options in the segment and hence Tiago was born. What might work for Tiago is the aggressive price point ranging between Rs 3.20 lakh to Rs 5.54 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). To start with, it does not look anything like we have seen before from the home grown auto maker, the hatchback looks fresh in appeal and features elements that bring it on par with arch rivals. Thankfully, for Tiago, it isn’t worked around Indica, although it does share the base floor pan with the latter, otherwise it has been developed from scratch. Interior styling is refreshing; there ins comfortable space for occupants and the finish is excellent. Even the hardware powering the hatchback is all-new. Tiago range is available in two fuel options, mated to a manual transmission. An AMT variant will also be added to the line-up either early next year or by mid-2017. It will remain unchanged aesthetically and under the hood the AMT version will get the 1.2 litre Revotron petrol engine making 83bhp and 114Nm. The AMT gearbox will be the same F-Tronic unit sourced from Magentic Marelli that is equipped in Nano and Zest.
With so much things on offer, Tata has totally nailed the pricing and it needs a mention here as sometimes a good product falls prey to high pricing, but Tata Tiago price in India is tagged smartly, giivng it an edge over rivals.
First glance at the hatchback would compel you to give it another look and why not as designers at Tata have come up with a new design language ‘impact’. True to its name, this new theme works well for Tiago as it looks well-proportioned from outside, although Tata has retained some elements like the smiling grille in front which has been reworked to look better. The bonnet in front is wide and held strongly. The black honey-comb grille is outlined by chrome, a thin line although. Headlamps are large and pulled back. Lower side of the bumper gets round fog lamps and air-intakes. View from side is impressive too. The chic rear profile gets integrated spoiler atop, a short windscreen, wrap-around tail lamps and a large body painted bumper.
The real surprise lies inside, Tata has worked really well in terms of design, finish, fit and comfort. The quality of plastic used in the cabin is top-notch which altogether leaves a good impression. The two-toned dashboard is designed well, however the highlight remains the wide centre console which is separated in two parts, the upper one features air con vents & infotainment system and the lower part features temperature dials. There is also a small shelf for storage beneath temperature dials, two cup holders on floor console and one bottle holder on all doors. Instrument cluster gets two large dials and the three spoke steering wheel has been borrowed from Zest and Bolt. The hatchback scores well on space front and as mentioned above there are ample storage points too. Luggage compartment is quite large at 242 litres which can further be increased by folding rear seats.
It is not just the flesh that is all new, but Tiago houses newly developed engines under the hood. Petrol variants are powered by the 1.2 litre, Revotron petrol unit built from aluminium. The three cylinder, DOHC engine develops 83.8bhp at 6000rpm and 114Nm. The diesel engine on the other hand is a 1.05 litre, three cylinder Revotorq engine good for 67bhp of power and 140Nm of torque. Both the engines come with drive modes- City and Eco, this is a segment first feature, absent in arch rivals. Tiago uses a five-speed manual unit and an AMT gerabox is expected to be introduced later.
Features such as new radiator grille in front, new tail lamps enclosures, integrated rear spoiler, dual tone interior theme, new dashboard integrated console, electronically adjustable outside rear view mirrors style the contemporary exterior. Inside the cabin, the car gets 3-spoke steering wheel borrowed from Zest/Bolt, cup holders, bottle holders, door pockets, LED fuel and temperature gauge, driver information system with digital clock, gear shift display, 2 trip meters, average fuel economy, distance to empty among several others.
The power delivery is far better in diesel unit, contradictory to the petrol engine which seems tad sluggish especially amid traffic, even the gear shifting isn’t smooth. Whereas the diesel unit is more refined and lighter than the petrol engine. Although NVH levels need to be reduced as noise is quite evident. Both the engines come with two drive modes-City and Eco, the Eco mode offers higher fuel economy as compared to City mode. Tata had tuned the engines to deliver impressive fuel economy. Fuel economy for petrol engine is rated at 23.84 km/l as opposed to 27.28 km/l delivered by diesel variants.
Tiago gets a Harman sourced infotainment system with four speakers and four tweeters along with AUX-IN, USB port, Bluetooth enabled navigation system and Bluetooth connectivity for audio streaming and telephone functions. Besides, it gets Juke Car app which enables each occupant to add to playlist through their respective device using the hotspot on mobile. Speed dependent volume control and steering mounted controls for audio and phone controls are some other vital features equipped on high-end trims
Tata Tiago Braking and Handling
Ride and handling is crisp, the car does well around corners and over potholes. Tyres play a vital role in balancing the car and suspension set up is quite stiff which absorbs most of the bumps. Braking force comes from disc brakes at front and drum units at rear axle.
Significant safety features like anti-lock-braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution, corner stability and dual airbags in front for driver and co-passenger are available on the top end variant of Tiago. Dual airbags are optional across range save for the base trim. Speed dependent auto door locks and follow me home head lamps are missing in base trims. Features like rear parking sensors, day & night inside rear view mirror, front fog lamps, rear defogger and rear smart wiper with wash are standard on the top-spec variant.
Comfort and Convenience
Height adjuster for driver, adjustable front head rests, boot lamp, cooled glove-box and one-shot down on driver side window are available only on the range topping variant. Standard features across range include electric power steering with tilt adjustment, remote fuel and tailgate opening, integrated rear neck rest, 7 speed front wipers, 100% flip and fold rear seat, driver footrest etc. Features such as air conditioner with heater, front & rear power windows and power adjusting wing mirrors are absent in base variants.
The lower variants of Tiago get 155/80 R13 steel tyres and the high end variants are equipped with 175/65 R 14 tyres. Alloy wheels are available only on the high end variants.
