The month of August proved to be good for some two-wheeler manufacturers and average for others. But all companies, at least the ones who have released their sales figures for the month of August 2018 have had positive growth. Some like Bajaj and Suzuki have had a solid outing while the others like Hero MotoCorp and Royal Enfield have had an average sale. The overall sales though could possibly pick up once the festive season sets in. Here is a look at how all manufacturers performed in the month of August 2018.
Bajaj Auto has had a consistent run of sales in FY2019. The numbers for August 2018 are in and Bajaj has sold a total of 362,923 units (Motorcycles only) as compared to 283,861 units sold in August 2017, registering a growth of 28 per cent. The domestic sales of Bajaj Auto in August 2018 were 218,437 units which is a growth of 27 per cent from the 171,664 units the company sold in August 2017. Bajaj Auto also recorded a 29 per cent growth in exports with 144,486 units exported in last month in comparison to 112,197 units exported in August 2017.
World's largest two-wheeler manufacturer, Hero MotoCorp, reported decent sales for the month of August 2018 in the country. The automaker sold 685,047 units of motorcycles and scooter in August this year, witnessing a growth of just one per cent, as compared to 678,797 units sold during the same month last year. The volumes remain consistent for the manufacturer which largely retails in the entry-level commuter motorcycle and scooter segment. With the festive season barely a month away, Hero could see better sales in the coming months.
TVS Motor Company
TVS Motor Company had a so-so run in August 2018 with total sales of 3, 43,217 units as compared to 3, 17,563 units sold in August 2017, which is a growth of 8 per cent This of course, includes the total sales and exports of two-wheelers and three-wheelers from TVS. Coming to two-wheelers in particular, TVS sold 3, 30,076 units in August 2018 as compared to 3, 09,146 units in August 2017, registering a growth of 7 per cent. Domestic two-wheeler sales recorded a growth of 2 per cent from 2, 70,544 units in August 2017 to 2, 75,688 units in August 2018. Scooter sales grew by 11 per cent from 1, 14,354 units in August 2017 to 1, 26,676 units in August 2018. Motorcycles sales showed more growth, of 18 per cent with sales increasing from 1, 11,927 units in August 2017 to 1, 31,743 units in August 2018.

Royal Enfield sold a total of 69,377 units in August 2018 as compared to 67,977 units in August 2017, recording year-on-year growth of just 2 per cent. Domestically, the company sold 68,014 units which is again a 2 per cent increase from 66,872 units sold in August 2017. The company's exports grew by 23 per cent with 1,363 units exported in August 2018 as compared to 1,105 units exported in August 2017. Till now, Royal Enfield has sold 354,740 units in India as opposed to 308,911 units sold during the same time last year, indicating a growth of 15 per cent. Similarly, the exports too grew by 20 per cent with 9,061 units exported in the year till date in comparison to 7,523 units exported during the same time last year.
Suzuki Motorcycle India
Suzuki Motorcycle India registered its highest ever monthly sales figures with 62,446 units sold in August 2018. This is an increase of 31 per cent when compared to the sales figures of August 2017. Out of the total sales for August 2018, more than 55,000 were that of the Suzuki's 125 cc scooter portfolio. Suzuki attributes this growth to the performance of its 125 cc scooter models which are the Suzuki Access 125 and the Suzuki Burgman Street. For the time period of April 2018 to August 2018, the company sold 2, 67, 888 units which is a growth of 41 per cent when compared to the sales during the same time last year.
