There has been a change in perspective when one looks at the MPV segment in India. About 5 years back, the MPV was only given form by three players Mahindra, Tata and Toyota. But then again, those were bulky people movers and there was a need for something smaller than then but bigger than a sedan.
Maruti Suzuki came out with the Ertiga, followed by Honda with the Mobilio and now Renault joins the bandwagon with the Lodgy. The competition keeps on increasing but with the benchmark for all these cars being the Innova, how do these cars fair in front of this giant. We compare the specifications of all the four cars to get a perspective.
When it comes to dimensions, the Innova beats all these cars hands down, with the Renault Lodgy in second and a closely fought third place by the Mobilio and the Ertiga. However, when it comes to the wheelbase it is the newcomer that pips the rest.

At 2810mm, the Lodgy rules the roost and that is one of its USPs. This translates into more space on offer and there is. However, for people who are taller, sitting in the second and third row might be a bit of an issue.
When it comes to the number of people the cars can accommodate, the Innova and Lodgy have the distinction of offering 7/8 seating option whereas the Ertiga and Mobilio can seat only 7. If it can seat those many, there is the question of their luggage and with all the seats upright, the Innova wins that battle with 300 litres of space on offer followed by, surprisingly, the Mobilio.
The Lodgy suffers here but does better than the Ertiga. There is more luggage space on offer in all the four cars with the third row seats folded down.

Finally, we come down to the engines on offer. It was the Innova who ruled this space too, but not anymore. With Renault's 1.5-litre K9K diesel engine (same as the Duster) churning out 109.8bhp the Lodgy is the most powerful MPV of the lot, with the Innova coming in second, the Mobilio in third followed by the Ertiga.
It will be a tough battle for the Lodgy as it has come late to the party but Renault has managed to give it traits that make it quite the competitor in this closely fought segment. When it comes to price, the Lodgy will compete with the likes of the Ertiga and Mobilio, and Renault hopes to enjoy the same kind of success the Duster received in India.
