After silently introducing a new petrol engine, additional safety features and the much awaited automatic transmission (only in the i20 hatchback) for the new i20 range, Hyundai India today officially announced their arrival. The Korean car maker has added the new 1.4-litre petrol motor to the i20's engine range that comes paired to a 4-speed automatic transmission. The new 1.4-litre Dual VTVT, four-cylinder petrol engine is listed on Hyundai India's website, and an official launch can be expected in the following days. The motor is capable of producing 98bhp of power at 6000rpm and 132Nm of torque at 4000rpm. The 4-speed torque converter doing duty here is the same unit that is seen on the Verna 4S and Grand i10. The i20 automatic does not get any specific feature additions but misses out on several features instead like ABS, reverse parking sensors, front fog lamps, auto headlamps, touchscreen infotainment system, smart key, projector lights, DRLs and much more.

Clearly, Hyundai has opted for the mid-trim to keep the asking price competitive, but we could see the automaker introduce the auto transmission on the premium variants later, based on the demand. With the more powerful engine and an automatic transmission, Hyundai is taking the fight to the likes of Ford Figo 1.5 AT, Volkswagen Polo 1.2 GT, Honda Jazz CVT as well as the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS.

Talking about the additional airbags, Hyundai has added side and curtain airbags to the i20, which incidentally were available on the first generation versions of the model along with rear disc brakes. However, the company discontinued both the features as well as the sunroof with the current generation model went on sale. Nevertheless, the safety feature is a big welcome and makes the premium hatchback, the second model of its kind get the same after the Ford Figo automatic.
