Mahindra and Mahindra, the home-grown utility vehicle manufacturer today confirmed that it will be launching an electric version of its sub-4 metre KUV100 in a little over a year's time, sometime around early 2019. Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, Mahindra and Mahindra announced the news earlier today, at the launch of the new 2017 Mahindra KUV100 NXT (facelift). Goenka also said that the company is planning to introduce electric versions for all its future crossover and SUV models, and the KUV100 EV will be the first of this fleet of electric Mahindra cars that are set to arrive. Early this month we told you that the company is planning to introduce two new electric vehicles by 2019, and one of them is possibly the Mahindra KUV100 electric vehicle.
Talking about the market for electric models in India and the company expectations, Pawan Goenka, said "Whether we have 20 per cent electric vehicles by 2030 or 100 per cent is perhaps a multi-billion dollar question. As of now, Mahindra is hedging its bet and has decided that for all crossover and SUVs, we will be working on electric versions in future." When asked whether the upcoming electric Mahindra KUV100 will also get the same powertrain as the one used in Mahindra Electric's e2o Plus, Rajan Wadhera, President, Automotive Sector, M&M said, "the electric KUV100 will get an all-new electric powertrain."
Currently the company's electric vehicle division, Mahindra Electric, already offers the e2o Plus, and e-Verito in the passenger vehicle segment and the e-Supro in the light commercial vehicle segment. Right now these are the only all-electric models on sale in India.
Earlier the company had also talked about the possibility of an electric XUV Aero Coupe, based on the Mahindra XUV Aero Coupe Concept, showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo. The company is currently working on a long-range electric motor which could go up to 350 km on a full charge, which could be the one used the XUV Aero Coupe EV.
As for the company's other electric vehicle projects, Mahindra has recently matched the lowest bid price offered by Tata Motors under the largest auction of 10,000 electric cars and will supply 150 vehicles in the first phase, state-run Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL). Additionally, early this entered into a partnership with Ola to provide 200 e2o Plus for app-based e-cabs service in Nagpur, Maharashtra.
