Stand out from the crowd in a macho yet sophisticated way

By Abhijit Lahiri
TUV 300 allows you to stand out from the crowd. It is not a in your face macho car nor is it a car with lots of curves. Rugged looks have been married with sophistication and that makes TUV 300 a one of its kind vehicle on Indian roads. Car performance is just about adequate - there are times you will feel the lack of power but it is not a very over-riding factor. Unless and until you want a vehicle to do highway duty. In the city, this is a fantastic car to drive with enough power to thrill you. Overall driving experience of this SUV is satisfactory though certainly not awe inspiring. Build is solid and you really feel safe once inside the TUV. Gives you a great visibility of the road though people who are using this vehicle from a sedan will take some time to get used to the high stance. But once the initial phase is over, you would just love to drive from the commanding position. Not just in terms of looks it is smart, it is a very utilitarian vehicle. Instead of a longer length, this SUV is broad and that makes seating really comfortable. And if at times you need a couple of extra seats, the jump seats at the back come in handy. And with the jump seats up, there is huge luggage space, not just in width but in height also. Given the heavy weight, the vehicle is well planted on roads but certainly will not inspire confidence at turns at high speed. But then smart people do not try such stupid acts on roads. AC is superb and chills the cabin quite fast, even in sweltering Delhi heat. Not having any vent at the middle row is not much of a dampner. In the top end specs, features like turning lights, rear sensors and audio system are great safety and comfort features to have. Coupled with dual air bags. While it is not really car like to drive, at the same time it is quite easy to manouvre in traffic and turning the SUV in tight spaces is also not difficult. Overall it is a nice vehicle to own, gives you decent driving comfort, makes you feel safe and certainly makes you look stylish.

I feel I am fooled by company

The average of this vechile mentioned by company is totally fake , it wil not not give you more than 13 kmpl on out side of city, and dont ask to tell about its average in city. Secondly due to large sale vechile is not care fully inspected during servicing . There is vast difference in statemen given by sales people v/s servicing people. On some point we feel we are cheated.

Mahindra TUV300 Preview

Mahindra wanted to offer a true SUV at a relatively lower price tag and went to the drawing board to create something that appeals to an urban as well as rural audience. In 2015, the Indian auto giant introduced the Mahindra TUV300 that emerged as a right package for those looking to upgrade to a compact SUV. The TUV300 gets its fundamentals right as an SUV while the frugal engine and the optional AMT unit makes it a convenient offering to live with, especially within city limits. In 2016, Mahindra introduced a 100 bhp version of the TUV for those who urged for more power from the vehicle. Competing against a host of established offerings, the TUV is the only subcompact SUV to get a diesel AMT automatic option, which makes it quite a unique proposition in the segment.

Mahindra TUV300 Exteriors

The Mahindra TUV300 saw a major design change within the company stable. While the proportions are boxy on the TUV, it still manages to look premium. Despite the tall height at 1839 mm, the automaker has contained the dimensions well under the 4-metre mark without making it look awkward. Mahindra has used the length to its fullest at 3995 mm, while the car is quite wide at 1835 mm and that reflects in the cabin too. The automaker says a battle tank has inspired the styling and the effect is certainly seen on the exterior. The TUV300 looks functional but quite urban as well, taking inspiration from old school British and American SUVs. For the modern day SUV user, the rugged feel is very much intact on the TUV without having to compromise on creature comfort or functionality. The SUV's vertically stacked front grille is reminiscent of its Mahindra roots, while the squared wheel arches and fog lamp enclosures are elements that stand out.

Mahindra TUV300 Interiors

The TUV300's interior has been much-appreciated one and is regarded as the best on any Mahindra vehicle so far. The extremely spacious cabin is quite pleasing to the eye and the layout looks minimalistic and quite premium as well. The cabin is finished in a dual-tone black and beige shades that lend an airy feel. There are silver inserts around the AC vents and the centre console gets a piano black finishing, so do the surrounds of the gear lever. The top trims get fabric-upholstered seats, while the base variants get vinyl ones. The front seats get an armrest, which the rear misses out on, but that makes way for three passengers to be comfortably seated. The almost flat floor also makes for more legroom and the large glasshouse area keeps the roomy feel in all sections of the cabin. The SUV uses a twin pod instrument cluster that is easy to read and also has a gear position indicator, while there are ample of cubby storage spaces and bottle holders all across the cabin.

The Mahindra TUV300 gets a 2+3+2 seating layout. Being a sub 4-metre vehicle though, there is no last row and instead, you get two jump seats that are at best avoided by adults. With the seats folded up, the TUV has a cargo space of 384 litres, which can be expanded to 720 litres with the second-row seats folded down. Overall, the TUV300's cabin is quite likeable and offers much more room than most of its rivals.

Under the hood, the Mahindra TUV300 uses a 1.5-litre three-cylinder diesel engine with a two-stage turbocharger that is a heavily reworked version of the one found on the Quanto. The new oil burner has been badged as 'mHawk' and is available in two states of tune. The TUV300 was originally launched as the mHawk80 in 2015 with the engine tuned to produce 84 bhp of power at 3750 rpm and 230 Nm of peak torque available between 1500-2250 rpm. On the other hand, the AMT version has power reduced to 81 bhp at 3750 rpm. While the motor was appreciated for its frugal nature, it lacked outright power on open roads. However, in mid-2016, Mahindra decided to improve the power and the subcompact SUV received the new mHawk100 option with the output increased to 100 bhp at 3750 rpm and torque increased to 240 Nm at 1600 rpm. The performance is a lot better on the TUV300 mHawk100 and feels more responsive as well.  Both powertrain options come paired to a 5-speed manual transmission as well as a 5-speed Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) unit, co-developed by Mahindra and Ricardo.

Mahindra TUV300 Features

The TUV300 gets ample of chrome garnish on the top variants that are sure to be liked by the Indian customers. The top trims get body coloured door handles, bumpers, electrically adjustable ORVMs and alloy wheels. The SUV is also equipped with static bending headlamps or cornering lights and Mahindra's Micro-Hybrid technology as well as brake energy regeneration technology that are restricted only to the manual versions. The SUV uses a 2-DIN infotainment system with a display screen offering Bluetooth, USB and AUX connectivity. There is reverse parking assist as well, while you get Driver Information System (DIS) and Voice Messaging System (VMS).

All variants of the Mahindra TUV300 get power steering with tilt function, front and rear power windows and an air conditioning unit. The top variants also come with steering mounted audio controls, remote lock and keyless entry. The SUV also comes with follow-me-home headlamps as well as mobile charging points for the first and second rows.

Mahindra TUV300 Safety & Security

Safety features on the Mahindra TUV300 include dual airbags on most variants, while the base trims get it as optional. The SUV also gets ABS with EBD on most trims, which is missed on the base T4 trim. The top trims get ISOFIX mounts for child seats in the second row along with a digital immobiliser, seatbelt reminder lamp, auto door lock while driving and anti-theft warning.

Mahindra TUV300 Performance & Mileage

The Mahindra TUV300’s ARAI efficiency stands at 18.49 kmpl on the mHawk80 version, which drops down to 18.05 kmpl on the 100 bhp version.

Mahindra TUV300 Dimensions

Mahindra TUV300 Handling and Braking

The TUV300 is underpinned by a body-on-frame platform which is a derivative of the current Mahindra Scorpio. In fact, the Scorpio and TUV300 share the same wheelbase length at 2680 mm, even though the latter is tucked under the 4-metre mark. However, given the old school chassis, the TUV300 is about 300 kg heavier than the monocoque built Ford EcoSport. This makes for slight body roll on the TUV300 due to the tall height. What the TUV does not offer in agility, it more than makes up for in comfort. The sub 4-metre SUV uses a double wishbone type suspension up front and a rear multi-link coil spring setup at the rear, which has been calibrated for a pliant ride quality. Braking power on the Mahindra TUV300 comes from disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. The brakes do feel a tad bit spongy on the pedal and there is a bit of nosedive due to hard deceleration.

Mahindra TUV300 Variants

The Mahindra TUV300 is available in a total of eight variants across two states of tune. The standard mHawk80 is available in the T4, T4+, T6, T6+, T8 and T8 AMT trims, while the mHawk100 is being offered only in the T8 and T8 AMT options. Mahindra also offers the dual-tone option on the TUV300 with a contrasting gloss black finished roof.

Mahindra TUV300 Accessories

Mahindra offers a range of accessories on the TUV300 for enhanced aesthetic appeal. In fact, the list is quite an extensive one as the automaker offers chrome bezels, chrome inserts on the grille, tail lights as well as the ski rack. Customers also get the option of a metal finished wheel cover, sports seat covers, projection lamps, roof carrier, bicycle carrier and more. There is an armoured body kit that includes a front armour, bonnet hull, side armour skirt, stone guard, bold wheel arches and marker lamps with a shroud. Inside, customers can upgrade to a touchscreen infotainment system, heads-up display (HUD) unit, illuminated scuff plates, rear seat entertainment system, rear view camera and much more.

Mahindra TUV300 Wheels & Tyres

The TUV300 uses 215/75 15-inch high profile radial tyres from CEAT that help absorb most undulations on road, allowing the SUV to just glide across most surfaces.
