Chevrolet Beat Preview
Chevrolet’s B segment hatchback has been around for quite some time now. After an initial spark, Beat’s popularity started fading amid rivals like Hyundai i10 and Maruti Suzuki Celerio. The sporty design of Beat made it stand out in the segment where most of the cars housed mundane styling. Launched in petrol version at the start, Chevrolet soon added the frugal diesel engine version to the line-up. In fact, Beat is one of the first small hatchbacks to get a diesel powertrain and continues to be a preferred option among the small capacity diesel cars in India. Interiors are sporty too but lack space on the rear side. Compared to rivals, Beat misses out on some of the comfort features.
Chevrolet’s B segment hatchback has been around for quite some time now. After an initial spark, Beat’s popularity started to fade amid rivals like Hyundai i10 and Maruti Suzuki Celerio. The sporty hatchback is available at a starting price of Rs 4.32 lakh and the range topping trim is available at Rs 6.57 lakh. The chic design made it stand out in the segment where most of the cars housed mundane styling. Launched in petrol version at the start, Chevrolet soon added the frugal diesel engine to the line-up. In fact, Beat diesel is one of the first small hatchbacks in the segment to get a diesel powertrain and continues to be a preferred option among buyers. Interiors are sporty too but lack room on the rear side. Equipment list is relatively less as compared to rivals.
Cabin embraces single tone colour theme with silver inserts around three-spoke steering wheel and dashboard. Dashboard is a tad small and has an elementary design. Centre console features squarish AC vents, music system with buttons and dials followed by temperature dials at the bottom. Instrument cluster has a unique design that gets an analog speedometer and digital pod for tachometer. Three-spoke steering wheel features mounted controls. There is enough space for storage in the cabin including a glove-box, cup-holders on centre console, and a utility cubby hole on the centre console. Leg space in front is comfortable, however thigh support isn’t impressive. Rear seats on the other hand offer restricted leg space.
Beat Engine Specifications & Transmission
Engine line-up includes a 1.2 litre, 16 valve, DOHC SMARTECH petrol engine good for 77.9 PS at 6200 RPM and 106.5 Nm at 4400 RPM. Diesel version employs a 1.0 litre, 12V, DOHC SMARTECH powerplant developing 57.1 PS at 4000 RPM along with 142.5 NM at 1750 RPM. A five-speed manual transmission is synced to both the engines.
Body coloured outside rear view mirrors are fitted on driver and co-passenger side. Alloy wheels are available as optional on top end trim. Features inside cabin are decent but nothing eminent, power outlet is provided in front and cup holders are available in front as well as rear. Other utility features include coat hooks, seat back shopping hooks, map pockets and bottle holder in front doors, semi-fabric seat covers and rear parcel shelf. Instrument cluster gets a icy blue illumination, digital tachometer, digital tripmeter, door ajar warning, low fuel warning and a digital clock.
Beat Performance & Mileage
Performance isn’t punchy and requires a lot of dint to keep the vehicle going on road. Claimed fuel economy for petrol and diesel engines is commendable. Under standard conditions, petrol variants can return 18.6 kmpl and diesel powered Beat can deliver 25.44 kmpl.
Beat Accessories & Infotainment
Infotainment related features are offered only on the top-spec variants giving a miss to the base and mid-level trims in the model series. The LT and LT (O) variants in the Beat range come with integrated audio system with AM/FM/CD and MP3 player. A USB port and AUX-In are also provided on top spec variants along with four speakers.
Beat Braking & Handling
Power is disabled by disc brakes in front axle and drum brakes at rear axle. Gas filled shock absorbers along with McPherson Strut type suspension with anti-roll bar in front and compound crank type at rear keeps the vehicle composed on road. The hatchback handles better in city conditions as compared to highways.
Chevrolet Beat Safety & Security
Beat despite being a part of the B segment lacks primary safety features which are otherwise available on the rivalling hatchbacks. Also considering the price range, Beat is deficient of vital safety equipment such as anti-lock-braking system, dual airbags in front and front seat belt load limiters which are available as optional features on top end trim. The rest of the range has to make do with height adjustable front head rests, driver seat belt reminder, day and night inside rear view mirror and central locking. Fog lamp is available only on the top end variants.
Chevrolet Beat Comfort & Convenience
Comfort and convenience features aboard include power steering, HVAC, internally adjustable outside mirrors, battery saver, dual horn, remote fuel lid opener, remote tailgate opener, rear seat back folding, 60:49 split folding rear seat, front power windows, passenger vanity mirror, height adjuster for driver’s seat, rear power windows, rear wash & wiper and tilt steering.
Chevrolet Beat Wheels & Tyres
14x4.5 J Steel wheels are available across range except for the LT (O) variant. Petrol variants run on 155/70 R14 tubeless tyres whereas diesel powered Beat rests on 155/70 R 14 tubeless tyres.
Chevrolet Beat Competition
Positioned at the entry level B segment, Beat competes with Hyundai i10, Maruti Suzuki Celerio and Tata’s upcoming Zica.
Practical storage points and imposing fuel economy.
Restricted leg room at rear.
Limited boot space and unimpressive feature list.
